Projects – West Virginia University Outreach

In 2012, a professor of recreational studies at West Virginia University contacted the team about building a robot to provide a way for those with disabilities to participate in Adaptive Physical Education (APE). When delivering the robot in October 2017, 1676 saw the joy it created first-hand. It was an emotional moment for the team, inspiring them to continue the long-term project. This past July, the robot was presented at the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilities.  New this year, the Pi-oneers are working with an Adaptive Physical Education teacher they met at the conference, Brad Weiner. He is raising funds to collaborate with the team to build a robot for his program.  The Pi-oneers are making a second version of the robot with the goal of assisting a greater range of disabilities through new interactive features such as an eye-motion control.
