Projects – LEGOs & a Movie

In 2012, Team 1676 created a way to raise money and promote STEAM and FIRST  with the “LEGOs & a Movie” fundraiser. Children in Kindergarten through 6th Grade are invited to build with LEGOs, meet Pi-oneers, and watch a STEAM-themed movie. While acting as a fundraiser for the team, the primary objectives of LEGOs & a Movie are to develop children’s creativity and building skills, and to interest them and their families early on.

Due to the success of this event, the Pi-oneers now annually hold 6 “LEGO & a Movie” events. For example, Team 1676 created “LEGOs & a Movie: Girls Who Build”, a girls-only event to inspire young girls to pursue STEAM. This year, the Pi-oneers incorporated coding and coding-themed teamwork exercises as a part of National Computer Science Education Week. In addition, the team holds ‘LEGOs & a Movie: Day at the Races”, where children build LEGO cars for a friendly race at the end of the event. New this year, the “LEGOs & a Movie: Destination Space” features space-themed activities that promote the 2018-2019 FIRST Robotics theme.
